Pope Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936) is the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and the first from the Americas. He became pope on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, he is the first Jesuit pope, as well as the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.
